It was Jubilation galore on Monday at the office of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Faith Opene, when she handed two children, earlier kidnapped, to their parents respectively.
The children had been stolen by suspected child traffickers who posed as co-tenants in their compound and had sold them to buyers for N1.6m, according to the Police.
Officials of the Gender Unit, State Criminal Investigation Department, Bayelsa State Police Command, revealed that they arrested the members of the child trafficking syndicate and rescued the children in Enugu and Abia State.
SP Asinim Butswat, Spokesperson of the command, revealed in a statement, that Sunday Aniele and Chioma Obi (the rogue tenants) were arrested at Ughelli, Delta State. Their accomplices, Kingsley Chimobi and Harriet Chukwu, were arrested at Onitsha, Anambra State and they confessed to getting one million six hundred Naira for the two children.
As the Commissioner handed over the two children to their parents, Ms. Rosemary Adi and Ms. Faith Seiya, she called on parents to be more watchful of their kids and wards.
“I call on Parents to be Vigilant with their children, don’t allow your children to go out alone with your neighbours, you don’t know who is a child trafficker. Landlords should also do due diligence before giving out their houses for rent,” Opene pleaded.
