Prof Mahmood Yakubu has formally handed over leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the oldest serving National Commissioner, May Agbamuche, who will now serve as the Acting National Chairman.
The transition was announced by Professor Yakubu on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. He solicited the full support of the commission’s staff for Agbamuche until a substantive chairman is appointed.
This handover marks the end of Yakubu’s historic two-term tenure, which spanned a decade and made him the first person to serve as INEC chairman for two full terms. His leadership oversaw two highly consequential general elections in 2019 and 2023.
With Yakubu’s departure, the focus now shifts to President Bola Tinubu, who is expected to nominate a permanent successor. The appointment will be subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
Yakubu was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015, taking over from Professor Attahiru Jega. After completing his first term in 2020, he was reappointed, cementing his place as a central figure in Nigeria’s recent electoral history.
