In a shocking incident which happened in Ondo state recently, a 39-year-old woman, Esther Godwin, is facing trial for allegedly pouring hot water on her husband’s worker, Endurance Samuel.
The incident according to eyewitnesses happened on July 8, in Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area of the state.
Witnesses in the community said Godwin, who is a food vendor, had invited Samuel to her shop to collect a keg of palm oil that her husband owed her.
When Samuel arrived at the shop, Godwin accused her of having an affair with her husband. Samuel on the other hand denied the accusation, but Godwin became enraged and poured hot water on her.
Samuel was rushed to the hospital, where she is still receiving treatment.
While narrating her ordeal, Samuel said: “Esther called me from where I was learning tailoring to come and collect the palm oil her husband is owing me. I also work as a labourer for her husband and some other farmers in the town.
“I rushed out of my oga’s shop excitedly, not knowing that the call was just to lure me to her shop where she was selling food, to pour hot water on me for the offence I did not commit”, she cried.
While confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, said Godwin was arrested by the police and charged with assault. She has since been released on bail.
However, Godwin’s husband has denied having any love affair with Samuel. He said she is only a labourer in his farm and now he is saddled with the burden of paying hospital bill.
“I am the one paying for the victim’s treatment at the hospital since the incident happened till date,” Godwin lamented.
The case is scheduled to be heard in court on July 25.
If convicted, Godwin could face up to two years in prison.
