Man jailed for extorting mother-in-law of ₦5m after promising her marriage to ex-President Buhari

In an event now being described as hilarious, a man has been jailed for defrauding his mother-in-law with a promise to contract her in marriage to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Gambo Adamu, a 35-year-old man from Niger State, was sentenced to 12 months in prison by a magistrates’ court sitting in Minna.

Adamu’s mother-in-law, Sa’adatu Aliyu, a divorcee, had approached the court, alleging that her son-in-law had extorted the sum of N5 million from her with the promise to connect her with Buhari for a marital relationship.

Aliyu told the court that her son-in-law had presented to her the sum of N100,000 as pride price, a basket of kola nuts, and fried chicken in a bag as gifts from Buhari during the wedding fatiha.

After the wedding, Aliyu realized that she had been duped as Buhari never showed up and Adamu refused to refund her money.

The presiding magistrate, Hajiya Fatima Awwal, found Adamu guilty of the two-count charge of cheating and extortion and sentenced him to 12 months in prison on each count.

The magistrate also ordered Adamu to refund the N5 million he had extorted from his mother-in-law.
