The National Screening Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Peter Obi to contest in the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 election.
Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday evening alongside Victor Umeh, senator representing Anambra Central, before appearing before the screening panel chaired by former education minister, Sam Egwu.
Speaking after the exercise, Egwu said the committee was satisfied with Obi’s performance and confirmed that he met all constitutional and electoral requirements needed to contest.
He subsequently presented Obi with an official clearance letter and the party’s presidential nomination form numbered 001.
Obi had picked the NDC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on Sunday, May 17, which was initially the deadline set for aspirants to obtain forms.
Although the party later extended the deadline for the collection of forms for other categories of aspirants to May 24, it maintained that the presidential nomination process had already closed.
The party also announced that the submission of completed nomination forms for screened and cleared aspirants would begin on May 20 and end on May 26.
