NDC: Obi backed Yesufu for Reps seat, not senate race

The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has revealed that Peter Obi initially wanted his ally, Aisha Yesufu, to contest for the AMAC/Gwari House of Representatives seat rather than the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate position.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Enekweizu said Obi had personally expressed support for Yesufu’s candidacy for the Red chamber seat after joining the party. However, he was surprised to later learn through social media that she had chosen to pursue the FCT Senate ticket instead.

According to him, the party leadership made several attempts to persuade Yesufu to run for the House of Representatives, but she insisted on contesting for the Senate, reportedly stating that she was “bigger than the reps office.”

Enekweizu said Yesufu eventually lost the party’s primary election and should seek redress through the party’s internal mechanisms if dissatisfied with the outcome. He also dismissed claims that she was unfairly treated, noting that several other Peter Obi supporters contested for the same ticket.

His comments follow similar remarks by NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson, who recently said both he and Obi had offered Yesufu a House of Representatives ticket, which she declined.

Yesufu, a prominent member of the Obidient Movement and former #BringBackOurGirls campaigner, had declared interest in the 2027 FCT senatorial race after joining the NDC from the ADC. She later withdrew from the contest after the party reportedly allocated the Senate ticket to another aspirant, Amanda Pam.
