Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, a popular Twitter doctor based in the United Kingdom, has been exonerated by the UK Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) from rape allegations levelled against him by his former girlfriend, Bolanle Aseyan, who is also a doctor.
The allegations were made in 2020, and Ogunsanya was suspended from practicing medicine while the MPTS investigated. The investigation concluded on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, and the MPTS found that the allegations against Ogunsanya had not been proved.
In a statement, the MPTS said that “the Tribunal has announced their decision and determined that all the allegations made against Dr Funmi have not been proved.” The Tribunal also ruled that Ogunsanya’s fitness to practice has not been impaired.
Ogunsanya’s lawyer in Nigeria, Inibehe Effiong, welcomed the decision, saying that it was “a victory for truth and justice.” He also said that the decision “should send a strong message to those who make false allegations of rape.”
Effiong explained that, “The Tribunal ruled that Dr Funmi’s fitness to practice has not been impaired.
“It is important to state that the standard of proof at the Tribunal which resulted in their findings was based on a balance of probability; and not proved beyond reasonable doubt. This is very significant because it shows that the allegation had no iota of merit or credibility.
Aseyan has not yet commented on the decision.
“This latest vindication of Funmi is a victory for all victims of false accusations of sexual misconduct.
“As one of the lawyers to Funmi in Nigeria, I’m excited by the outcome of the case at the Medical Tribunal.
“The false accuser, Dr Bolanle Aseyan, is currently facing both civil and criminal lawsuits in Nigeria for her actions”, the lawyer said.
Recall that in October of 2020, Bolanle who is also based in the UK, via her Twitter handle #bola_aseyan has accused Olufunmilayo of sexually assaulting her.
She described Olufunmilayo as being an entirely different person from what he puts up for people online and she swore that she had enough proof of back her allegations.
When Ogunsanya came out to deny the allegations, the case was taken to the UK Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.
This case has drawn attention to the issue of false allegations of rape as thousands of online users have called for the accused to be prosecuted.
Notably, the ex-girlfriend now faces a lawsuits for false rape accusations against the doctor.
