The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with the winners of the 2026/27 season set to receive a minimum of ₦1 billion.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko disclosed the development during a meeting with officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the commercial appeal, professionalism and competitiveness of domestic football.
Under the new reward structure, the league runners-up will receive ₦500 million, while the third-placed team will earn ₦300 million, subject to final approval by league authorities. The previous league champions’ prize stood at ₦200 million.
The meeting also produced an agreement to introduce a minimum monthly wage of ₦2 million for NPFL players, a move aimed at improving players’ welfare and raising professional standards across the league.
Dikko said the discussions with NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi focused on key reforms needed to accelerate the growth of Nigerian football and sustain success at all levels.
The stakeholders further agreed on the strict enforcement of enhanced club licensing requirements to improve governance and operational standards within the league.
Enugu Rangers are the reigning NPFL champions, while the commencement date for the 2026/27 season is yet to be announced.
