Plateau police arrest herdsman for cutting off farmer’s hand

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a herdsman, Abdulrahman Kaila, for allegedly cutting off the hand of a farmer in the Lakushi community of Shendam Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred last week when the farmer, Jeremiah Yan, asked the herdsman to move his cattle out of his rice farm. The herdsman, who was armed with a machete, allegedly attacked the farmer and cut off his left hand.

A video showing the farmer holding his severed right hand with blood went viral last week and the victim was heard in the heart rendering clip narrating to some men how a herder came into his farm and cut off his hand because he had asked him to move his animals out of his farm.

Alabo Alfred, the state Police Public Relations Officer, said on Sunday that investigations are concluded and the suspect is about to be arraigned in court.

“We have arrested the suspect who chopped off a person’s hand. He is in our custody now. We were able to arrest him through our intelligence network. It is not as if he surrendered himself willingly. It is our strategy at play and we won’t disclose it.

“When police got the news, the state Commissioner of Police instructed the DPO to go after the perpetrator, and after a swift reaction by the DPO, the suspect was arrested and he gave us his reason for cutting the hand of the farmer.

“The only thing I can tell you is that the investigation has been concluded and the suspect will be charged in court tomorrow (Monday) or on Tuesday.”
