46 years old Colombian pop star, Shakira has reached a deal with Spanish prosecutors to avoid a trial over charges she failed to pay 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) in Spanish income tax between 2012 and 2014.
Under the deal, which was announced on Monday, Shakira will pay a fine of 7.3 million euros ($8 million) and accept a suspended three-year prison sentence. She will also pay an additional fine of 438,000 euros ($478,000) to avoid jail time.
Prosecutors had accused Shakira of using offshore companies to hide her earnings from the Spanish tax authorities. The singer has maintained her innocence throughout the legal process.
“This decision to reach a deal responds to personal, emotional and sentimental reasons that have nothing to do with legal (reasons),” Shakira said in a statement released by her Spanish communication agency, adding that she was ready to defend her innocence but decided to prioritize her career and kids.
“I have reached the conclusion that winning is not a victory if the price is that they rob you of so many years of your life. I have always cooperated with the law and fulfilled my tax obligations,” she added.
Shakira’s lawyers said that the singer had already paid all of the taxes she owed, plus interest. They also said that she had cooperated fully with the investigation.
According to fans, the deal is a significant victory for Shakira, who had faced the prospect of a lengthy and expensive trial. It also comes as a relief to them as they expressed concern about the negative impact the case could have on her career.
Shakira is one of the most successful pop stars in the world, having sold over 80 million records worldwide. She is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has been involved in various philanthropic efforts.
