Two persons have been charged on Thursday in a Badagry, Lagos State, magistrates’ court for reportedly taking N34,350 from the deceased victims of an accident on the Lagos-Badagry highway.
The police arraigned Babatunde Olatunji, 37, and Tunde Afolabi, 41, on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and theft, to which they pleaded innocence.
According to the prosecution’s lawyer, Insp. Ayodele Adeosun, the suspects whose addresses were not revealed, committed the crime on 9 July at around 11 a.m. at the Muhammadu Buhari Bus Stop on the Lagos-Badagry motorway, in Age-Mowo, Lagos,
Adeosun said that the defendants took N34,350 from 18 passengers who were killed in an accident on the Lagos-Badagry motorway.
The police noted that the defendants were nabbed and handed over to its agents by witnesses at the accident scene, so they could face charges.
Adeosun said that the offence was against sections 411 and 287 of the 2015 Lagos Criminal Law.
The defendants were granted bail in the amount of N200,000 apiece with two sureties in the same amount by Magistrate T. A. Popoola.
Popoola ruled that the sureties had to be employed and set the case for mention on August 21.
