It is evident, with numbers that the past year, 2022, was a great year for Nollywood films at the box office.
Just recently, Battle on Buka Street, directed by Funke Akindele, broke the record for highest-grossing Nigerian movie.
Her 2020 film “Omo Ghetto: The Tale,” which generated N636 million, previously held this position.
We examine the top 10 Nollywood films with the highest-grossing revenue in light of this new major achievement:
BATTLE ON BUKA STREET – N640 MILLION
According to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), after only nine weeks in theatres, the comedy-drama made N646,532,267 and counting
With her most recent success, Akindele once again demonstrates why she is queen of the box office.
The story of two half-sisters who have been enemies for a while is followed in the 2022-released film. As they both decide to open up their restaurants on the same street, their rivalry becomes more intense.
Directed by Akindele and Tobi Makinde, the cast includes Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Nkem Owoh, Sola Sobowale, Kelvin Ikeduba, and Tina Mba.
OMO GHETTO: THE SAGA – N636,129,120
In this comedy, Shalewa, often known as Lefty (Funke Akindele), leads a crazy life. Lefty must decide whether to return to her ghetto lifestyle or live a life of luxury and comfort provided by her adoptive mother.
The film, which will be released on December 25, 2020, is a follow-up to the actress’s 2010 trilogy “Omo Ghetto,” which is about twin sisters who are displaced at birth. Akindele and her ex-husband JJC Skillz are the directors.
THE WEDDING PARTY –N452,288,605
From the time of its release in December 2016 till the arrival of “Omo Ghetto: The Saga,” Kemi Adetiba’s romantic comedy maintained its position as the highest-grossing Nollywood film.
The film, which was produced by Ebonylife Productions, FilmOne, Inkblot Production, and Koga Studios, stood out for having the proper balance of romance and humour while also showcasing the funny drama associated with planning a large wedding.
The film, which starred the famous duo Adesua Etomi and Banky Wellington, was a hit both at home and abroad. It was released about seven years ago, but it still ranks highly on this list.
THE WEDDING PARTY 2 –N433,197,377
Ebonylife Productions, FilmOne, Inkblot Production, and Koga Studios attempted to recapture the magic of the first film’s popularity.
The sequel, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, featured a larger party with a British and Nigerian couple, set in Nigeria and Dubai.
CHIEF DADDY –N387,540,749
The movie generated N115.7 million in the first 10 days of release and sold over N40 million worth of cinema tickets in just three days.
It was the third-highest opening weekend for a Nollywood movie overall and the second-highest opening weekend for a Nollywood movie in 2018.
The film, which was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, is based on the dysfunctional family of polygamist and benefactor Chief Daddy. His children fight to receive a just inheritance after his death.
The sequel, in contrast to the first film’s success, received generally unfavourable reviews.
BROTHERHOOD –N328,881,122
The film, which was produced by Jade Osiberu and was directed by Ugandan filmmaker Loukman Ali, debuted with N53.23 million. Brotherhood continued to earn N118.50 million in the second week, N177.67 million in the third week, and crossed the N200 million threshold in the fourth week.
The movie depicts the tale of twin brothers who, following the sad death of their parents when they were young, find themselves on opposing sides of the law. As the second becomes an armed robber, the first becomes a police officer. The latter must track down the other one and prosecute him.
It features Folarin Falana, Tobi Bakre, Sam Dede, Boma Akpore, Toni Tones, Zubby Micheal, and Mr Macaroni.
KING OF THIEVES (AGESINKOLE) –N320,805,150
Despite being an indigenous title, this epic thriller stood out last year for making a tonne of money. As the highest non-English title and top domestic grosser of the last year, it established a new record.
Throughout the first three days, the movie’s opening weekend took in over N42 million. The movie sold 249 million Naira worth of tickets after 27 days.
The epic narrative of the Kingdom of Ajeromi, plagued by a gang of robbers led by an all-powerful bandit named Ageshinkole, was produced by Euphoria 360 and Anthill Studios. Because of his theft, the kingdom sends forth its hunters, witches, and priests to kill him.
Femi Adebayo, Adebayo Salami, Joke Muyiwa, Toyin Abraham, and Lateef Adedimeji are among the cast members under the direction of Odunlade Adekola.
SUGAR RUSH –N287,053,270
The fifth-highest-earning Nollywood film of all time was this 2019 comedy.
It is produced by GreOH Media, Jungle Filmworks, and Empire Mates Entertainment under the direction of Kayode Kasum.
Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and Bimbo Ademoye featured in the Christmas Day release of the heist comedy. Post-production for the sequel is now underway.
IJAKUMO: THE BORN-AGAIN STRIPPER –N271,926,634
This suspense film, a Toyin Abraham Films and Filmone joint venture, defied movie office forecasts last year.
The movie quickly grossed N88.28 million in seven days after debuting with N30.44 million in its first three days. In just 10 days, the movie surpassed the N100 million mark.
In its third weekend, it brought in N192.79 million, and by the third week, it had surpassed N200 million. The movie “Ijakumo” is currently ranked fifth, following “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Toyin Abraham has shown with this blockbuster non-comedy film that she is a financially successful director with the skills necessary to fill theatres regardless of her pay.
CHRISTMAS IN MIAMI –N265,583,000
The opening weekend revenue for this 2021 release was N60.38 million, while the first week after release saw over N100 million in revenue.
This comedy series, which was directed by Robert O. Peters, carries on Akpos’ entertaining adventures. Ayo Makun, Osita Iheme, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and IK Ogbonna are the film’s stars.
It’s no surprise that this film made the list because it was produced by well-known comedian Ayo Makun, a box office favourite.
