Sokoto state Governor, Ahmad Aliyu surprised workers of the Sokoto Specialist Hospital on Monday when he appeared at the facility unannounced to carry out an on-site assessment.
The Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa explained that the number one man of the state disguised himself as a Tricycle rider and proceeded to the hospital because he had received numerous complaints from residents of the state about the abysmal condition of the facility.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), residents had complained of continuous shortage of medical personnel and supplies, dilapidated buildings, little or no supply of electricity, no running water and inadequate medical equipment.
In a statement, Bawa quoted the Governor’s saying:”I was surprised with what I saw during my visit to the hospital, which lasted for four hours; it afforded me an opportunity to see things for myself.
“Patients and their relatives are subjected to all kinds of hazardous situations owing to dirty environment and lack of functional equipment in the medical facility.
“Patients’ relatives rely solely on alternative sources of power due to erratic electricity supply in the hospital.
“I have directed the management of the hospital to see me for further discussions on how to remedy the situation”, the Governor said.
A management staff of the Specialist Hospital had told NAN that the past administration had withheld their monthly allocation because of the terrible state of things in the facility.
