In a night filled with pride and excitement, Nigerian superstar Victor Osimhen, 24, was crowned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards ceremony.
After years of consistent performance and exceptional skill, Osimhen’s dream of claiming this prestigious accolade finally became reality.
The electrifying striker, known for his pace, power, and clinical finishing, has been on a tear for both club and country. His goal glut helped propel Napoli to the Serie A title last season, solidifying his position as one of the most feared strikers in Europe. On the international stage, Osimhen has been instrumental in the Super Eagles’ resurgence, leading the line with his characteristic passion and determination.
Upon receiving the award, an emotional Osimhen expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, teammates, and coaches for their unwavering support throughout his journey. He dedicated the award to the people of Nigeria, stating, “This is not just my victory, but a victory for the entire nation.”
Osimhen beat Mo Sallah of Egypt and Ashraf Hakimi at the event which was held in Morroco on Monday.
Furthermore, Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria won in the women category; while Nigeria also won the Best Female Team Of The Year as well as the Goal Keeper of The Year.
Notably, Osimhen is the first Nigerian to win the coveted prize since Nwankwo Kanu won it in 1999.
