The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate redesign and upgrade of the abandoned recreational garden at the Life Camp Roundabout into a modern leisure and sporting park, as part of efforts to expand recreational infrastructure and green spaces across Abuja.
Wike gave the directive on Monday after inspecting the site, saying the project would be treated as an emergency because residents deserve quality public spaces for relaxation, recreation and sporting activities.
The planned redevelopment comes on the heels of the successful remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, which has become a major attraction since it was commissioned during activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.
According to the minister, the transformation of the City Gate also earned the FCT Administration an award and commendation from the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Green Nigeria Challenge.
He said the recognition had further strengthened the administration’s resolve to invest in more green and recreational spaces across the nation’s capital.
Wike credited the First Lady for drawing attention to the importance of preserving and improving public spaces, noting that the City Gate had become a destination where residents and visitors gather both during the day and at night.
He said the award would serve as additional motivation for the FCT Administration to continue implementing the objectives of the Renewed Hope Initiative by creating cleaner, greener and more attractive public spaces.
The minister lamented the neglect of the Life Camp recreation park by previous administrations, describing it as a facility with enormous potential that had been left to deteriorate over the years.
He said the administration intends to restore the park with modern facilities that will provide opportunities for exercise, relaxation, recreation and photography, comparable to similar facilities in leading cities around the world.
To fast-track the project, Wike directed the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA) to immediately prepare a redesign proposal, stressing that the project would not be delayed by the usual bureaucratic procedures.
He said the administration would invite reputable companies to submit design proposals and compare different concepts before selecting the best option, with the goal of delivering a world-class recreational facility within the shortest possible time.
Expressing admiration for the site’s natural landscape, Wike said the topography offered enormous potential for a landmark recreation park capable of improving the quality of life for residents.
The minister also announced plans to introduce an annual New Year fireworks display at the Abuja City Gate beginning this year, saying the initiative is intended to bring Abuja in line with other major capital cities around the world that welcome the New Year with spectacular fireworks celebrations.
He added that the Tinubu administration remains committed to restoring hope by providing infrastructure and public amenities that enhance the well-being of residents.
The redevelopment of the Life Camp Recreation Park forms part of the FCT Administration’s broader strategy to expand access to green spaces, leisure parks and recreational facilities across Abuja.
