An over speeding Dangote cement truck has crashed into some vehicles in Ogun state, killing a police officer and injuring five others.
The road accident happened around Saiten Petrol Station, along Abeokuta-Lagos expressway on Tuesday night.
Speaking the incident on Wednesday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials noted that the Dangote truck, a tipper, a yellow bus, an armoured tank, a Toyota RAV4, and three motorcycles were among the nine vehicles that were involved in the collision.
According to Florence Okpe, the FRSC’s spokesperson in Ogun State, eight people were involved in the accident: seven adult males and one adult female.
Okpe stated that “one person was killed while two were unhurt,” adding that “four male adults and one female adult were injured.”
She attributed the accident to the Dangote truck driver’s reckless overtaking and speeding, claiming he lost control and slammed into several vehicles from behind.
The Dangote vehicle later crashed into the river, she said.
Okpe said that the collision caused the Toyota RAV4 vehicle to catch fire. She claimed that the fire was put out using the fire extinguisher at the gas station, but some motorcycles were burned.
She also added that wounded victims from the accident, including the police officer on duty, have been taken to the hospital for proper care. However, the police officer later died.
“The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital in Ota for medical attention.
“One person identified as the police officer, who was on duty, got injured and was also taken to the hospital by the FRSC rescue team, but he later died.”
Meanwhile, speaking on the incident, Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander for the FRSC in Ogun state, sympathized with the families of the victims.
He also urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic laws at all times.
