A Lagos resident, has been punished by a mobile court attached to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and ordered to observe 144 hours of social service.

The resident, one Rukayya Oderinde, was captured on camera discharging her household refuse into a water canal at No. 17 Hassan Ogunmola Street, Ahmadiyya, somewhere in the outskirts of the state.

The Managing Director oF LAWMA, Ibrahim Odumboni, who revealed this on Sunday to newsmen said this will serve as deterrent to others.

The displeased administrator explained that Oderinde’s action is frowned at under their waste management regulations as it can lead to blockage of the water canal.

He said:

“Ms Oderinde, the culprit, was captured red-handed on camera, discharging her household refuse directly into a water canal and subsequently charged to court and sentenced to 144hours of community service.

“She will serve the punishment 8hours daily for 18 days and is expected to commence her 8hours per day community service from Ahmadiyya to Salolo route, cleaning the environment daily.

“Oderinde action is strictly prohibited under existing Lagos state waste management regulations, as is poses serious threats to the overall cleanliness and functionality of the drainage system.

“The state residents should be conscious of the fact that improper waste disposal, particularly through water canals, could lead to clogged drains, which in turn caused flooding during heavy rains.

“May I use this opportunity to remind Lagos state residents to cultivate and practice proper waste disposal methods and avoid potential consequences of non-compliance.

“LAWMA is therefore urging them to use designated waste bins and containers for household waste.”
