Elizabeth Gift, who pleaded guilty to duping her husband, Mr Boniface, the sum of N2m has been sentenced to 18months in prison by a magistrate’s court sitting in Kano State.
Elizabeth was arraigned in court following her husband’s complaint after she could not give account of the sum of N2,050,000 given to her, to deposit in the bank.
Jamilu Abubakar, counsel to the plaintiff, told the court that sometime in April, his client had given his wife – the defendant the sum of N2,050,000 and his account details to deposit the said money in his account in the bank, but she came back home without the cash or depositing the money, claiming she was attacked by armed men who forcefully took the money from her.
Abubakar further told the court that her claims were investigated and it revealed the money was not forcefully taken from her but rather, she deliberately gave the money to some fraudlent people, who assured her they will invest the money and return it with interest within a short period.
After listening to the submission of the plaintiff’s counsel, the presiding Magistrate Halima Nasir, on Tuesday, sentenced the defendant to 18 months in jail and ordered she restitute the plaintiff, her husband, the sum of N2,050,000.
The convict was however, given an option to pay a fine of N50,000 in place of the 18 months in prison.
