A 54-year-old man has been detained by the Cross-River State Police Command on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend in Calabar South Local Government Area.
The arrest was officially confirmed by the public relations officer for the command, SP Irene Ugbo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
She claimed that on Tuesday at Abasi Obori Street, a minor argument ensued between the man and his girlfriend – the victim, resulting in the suspect attacking the victim, named Ndereke.
According to Ugbo, the arrest was made by operatives of the Uwanse Divisional Police Headquarters in response to a distress call about the occurrence.
The victim was taken directly to UCTH, the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital by the police. She, unfortunately, did not make it, as the on-call doctor declared her dead when she arrived.
Her body was placed in the mortuary in accordance with standard procedures so that an autopsy could be performed to determine the precise cause of death.
Ugbo said they have the suspect (name withheld) in custody and will make sure he receives the full force of the law for his alleged crime.
