In a major loss to the Nigerian entertainment and media industries, legendary singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72.
The news broke late on Tuesday night, following her sudden collapse at a birthday celebration for her friend and founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical, Mrs. Stella Okoli.
According to reports, Onwenu, who had just delivered a captivating performance at the event, collapsed shortly after her set.
Eyewitnesses at the party reported that she was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, but despite medical efforts, she could not make it.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” an eyewitness said
As at the time of this report, the singer’s family has not yet made an official announcement regarding her death.
Onwenu’s remarkable career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian music, broadcadting and film industries.
Her acclaimed albums, including In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun, showcased her extraordinary talent and contributed significantly to the rich tapestry of Nigerian music.
In addition to her musical success, she was also celebrated for her roles in prominent films such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart.
