How we built Nigeria’s second largest food chain – Sundry Foods boss

At the backdrop of its 20th anniversary the Managing Director and Founder of Sundry Foods Limited, Mr. Ebele Enunwa, has reeled out the tough road to the making of one of Nigeria’s leading food services brand.

Speaking at the anniversary event of the company in Lagos last weekend, Enunwa explained that the brand was created out of the yawning gap in provision of standard eatery particularly in his location then, Port Harcourt, Rivers State which hosted upwardly mobile Nigerian middle class and foreigners in the oil and gas industry.

But he added that the initial vision was expanded to drive a national coverage and the company is now positioned for international expansion to export Nigeria’s cuisine.

In retrospection of the journey and introspection into the future, he stated: “We made many errors over the years. We learnt many hard lessons from our errors and failures. One of our earliest drives was our desire to break into Oil & Gas catering – the most lucrative segment of the catering industry. Till today, we are yet to achieve this objective but this hasn’t stopped us from building one of the largest catering businesses in Nigeria.

“We sought to build a chain of casual dining restaurants and launched what we called ‘Coral Blue Seafood Restaurant’ to funfair a decade ago. That restaurant has since shutdown but that hasn’t stopped us from building the second largest restaurant chain in Nigeria today. “One thing that kept us going was an unwavering and collective desire to succeed especially where others had failed and to always exceed the customer’s expectations. Obviously we banked many more successes than failures and that is why we are here today.”
