President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ette Ibas (rtd) as the administrator of Rivers State.
This follows the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, deputy governor Ngozi Odu and members of the house of assembly who have been feuding for more than one year.
In a national broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu said his personal interventions and those of other Nigerians have not yielded peace.
He also said, Governor Fubara has not disowned people who have threatened the peace of the state and country since the supreme court judgement which made pronouncements that appear not in favour of Fubara.
“In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State,” the statement reads.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with their constitutional mandate.”
Ibas, 64, is a former chief of naval staff under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was also an ambassador.
