How 19 died on Lokoja-Obajana expressway – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a devastating accident that occurred along the Lokoja-Obajana expressway on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 19 passengers. In a statement issued on Monday, FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide confirmed that eight individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.

The incident, which took place around 6:10 PM, involved a collision between a Sino Truck and a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 27 passengers, including 22 adults and five children.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road crash in Gadabiu on the Obajana-Lokoja expressway. He lamented the preventable loss of lives and extended condolences to the families affected.

To combat the rising incidence of speed-related accidents, the Corps Marshal has directed all sector commanders to engage in aggressive public education and enforce the mandatory installation of speed limit devices in commercial vehicles. He emphasized that the FRSC will no longer tolerate reckless driving and plans to implement strict measures against speed violators.

Further, the Corps Marshal has ordered the deployment of enhanced enforcement strategies, including increased surveillance and patrols on high-risk routes. The crash was attributed to speed violations and wrongful overtaking.

The bodies of the deceased victims have been transported to a mosque for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. Ogungbemide urged all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
