Why Atiku is yet to formally move to ADC after dumping PDP

Atiku Abubakar has yet to formally complete his transition to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last week, according to a close source. The delay in his registration appears to be a strategic decision, with Abubakar intending to undertake the process in person rather than through a representative.

In a discussion with Vanguard in Abuja, the source revealed that Abubakar’s recent travels were the primary reason for the hold-up. “He returned to Nigeria for the burial of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, coming straight from a business trip abroad. From Daura, he then travelled back overseas for a planned two-week break,” the source stated.

The source emphasized that for someone of Abubakar’s stature, it is essential to have a visible presence during the registration process. “People need to physically see him picking up his membership card and completing the formalities. Once he returns from his break, that’s one of the first major things he is expected to do,” the source explained.

Additionally, the source noted that Abubakar is acutely aware of the symbolic significance of this move, which has the potential to influence political alliances and public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

When asked about the timing of the registration, the source indicated that it would likely be planned to maximize media visibility and political impact. While the exact date remains unconfirmed, the source assured that Abubakar’s formal entry into the ADC is imminent and will mark a significant new chapter in opposition politics.
