Nurses suspend strike after reaching agreement with FG – Health Minister

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its warning strike after reaching key agreements with the Federal Government, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

Speaking to journalists on Friday following a closed-door meeting with the union’s leadership, Pate confirmed that the industrial action had been called off. However, leaders of the union declined to comment publicly on the outcome of the meeting.

The nurses and midwives had commenced the strike on July 29, 2025, citing the government’s failure to address their demands after issuing a 15-day ultimatum on July 14. The strike, which affected public health institutions nationwide, was initially scheduled to last until August 5.

The industrial action was triggered by longstanding grievances related to poor welfare, inadequate allowances, and unfavourable working conditions. The union’s demands included an upward review of shift and uniform allowances, a dedicated nursing salary structure, increased core duty allowances, mass recruitment of nurses, and the establishment of a Nursing Services Department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

NANNM National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had earlier criticised the government for failing to utilise the negotiation window provided before the strike began, stating that the action was driven by widespread discontent among nurses.

While specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, Pate expressed optimism that the resolution would lead to improved engagement between the government and health workers moving forward.
