Niger governor orders closure of radio station over alleged incitement

Umar Bago, the governor of Niger state, has directed the commissioner of police to seal off Badeggi FM radio station, citing allegations of incitement to violence. This directive was issued on Friday during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders at the government house in Minna.

In a statement from Bologi Ibrahim, the chief press secretary, Governor Bago described the “daily activities of the radio station” as unethical. He accused the station’s owner of inciting the public against the government and called for the revocation of the station’s license.

“The governor instructed the commissioner for homeland security and the commissioner of police to close the radio station, emphasizing the need for security operatives to profile its owner due to the station’s promotion of violence,” the statement noted.

Badeggi Radio 90.1 FM, which began operations in 2020 under the ownership of Shuaibu Badeggi, has gained attention for its programming. However, despite the governor’s orders, he lacks the legal authority to unilaterally close a radio station, as matters regarding broadcast content fall under the jurisdiction of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
