WAEC releases 2025 SSCE results, as candidates achieving five credits decrease

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the release of the 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results for school candidates. Amos Josiah Dangut, head of the WAEC Nigeria office, made this announcement during a press briefing held in Lagos.

The 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates occurred from April 24 to June 20, 2025. A total of 1,973,365 candidates registered for the examination across 23,554 recognized secondary schools in the country, which included 12,178 candidates with various special needs.

In terms of participation, Dangut reported that of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination, 976,787 were male (49.60%), while 992,526 were female (50.40%).

He further revealed that 1,517,517 candidates, representing 77.06%, had their results fully processed and released. However, 451,796 candidates, making up 22.94%, still have one or more of their subject results pending due to unresolved issues. Efforts are underway to expedite the processing of these results.

In a concerning trend, Dangut noted that only 754,545 candidates, equating to 38.32%, obtained credits in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a significant 33.8% decline compared to the previous year’s results.

The performance analysis indicated that out of all candidates who sat the examination, 1,718,090 (87.24%) achieved credits in at least any five subjects (whether or not including English and Mathematics). Out of those with five or more credit passes, 347,192 were male (46.01%) and 407,353 were female (53.99%).

The comparison with the previous year highlights a decrease in the number of candidates achieving this benchmark, as only 72.12% reached the same level in the 2024 WASSCE.
