Tinubu approves health subsidy, cuts dialysis fees in federal hospitals to ₦12,000

The Federal Government has announced a major intervention to improve healthcare access for Nigerians battling kidney diseases, with President Bola Tinubu approving a sharp reduction in the cost of dialysis sessions across federal hospitals.

Under the new arrangement, the price of each dialysis session has been slashed from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000, a move expected to bring significant relief to thousands of patients undergoing treatment.

According to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the subsidised dialysis service is now available at 10 federal medical centres and teaching hospitals, including:

  1. FMC Ebute-Metta, Lagos
  2. FMC Jabi, Abuja
  3. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
  4. FMC Owerri
  5. University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
  6. FMC Abeokuta
  7. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
  8. FMC Azare
  9. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin
  10. University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

The government noted that more hospitals will be added to the scheme before the end of the year to expand nationwide access.

This comes on the heels of a similar intervention last year when President Tinubu approved free cesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals, a policy aimed at reducing maternal deaths and strengthening maternal healthcare.

Health officials say both measures reflect the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to ensure that no Nigerian is denied healthcare due to financial constraints.
