Food vendor lynched in Niger over alleged blasphemy

In a tragic incident in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, a food vendor was lynched by a mob over allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

The victim, identified as Amaye, reportedly made remarks considered offensive during a conversation with a customer at her restaurant on Saturday.

According to eyewitness accounts, the situation escalated after the customer jokingly proposed marriage to Amaye, referencing traditions associated with the Prophet. This exchange prompted her to respond with comments that were perceived as blasphemous, inciting outrage among those present.

Local authorities acted swiftly, with the district head of Kasuwan-Garba intervening by initially detaining Amaye and handing her over to security operatives for questioning. However, chaos ensued as a large mob quickly overwhelmed the security personnel. Tragically, before reinforcements could arrive, Amaye was lynched and set ablaze by the angry crowd.

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating, “On August 30, 2025, at approximately 2 p.m., we received reports that Amaye made comments against the Islamic prophet, which unfortunately led to a mob attack. She was set ablaze before additional security teams could arrive.”

Authorities are now focused on apprehending individuals involved in the mob attack, with ongoing efforts to investigate and prosecute those responsible. This incident highlights the growing concern over mob violence and the delicate issues surrounding accusations of blasphemy in Nigeria.
