The Federal Government is considering the creation of a presidential task team to drive the conceptualisation and implementation of good architecture across Nigeria.
This was one of the key requests presented by a delegation from the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), led by its President, Mobolaji Adeniyi, during a courtesy visit to Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.
The institute also named Shettima as Nigeria’s “Champion of Good Architecture” in recognition of his support for elevating design as a national priority and a tool for unlocking economic potential.
Responding, Shettima assured the NIA of President Bola Tinubu’s full support, stressing that the administration would work with architects to advance national development.
“I want to assure you that all your requests are hereby granted. In President Bola Tinubu, you have a formidable ally with whom we can collectively catapult our nation,” Shettima said.
He urged the architects to support the government’s efforts, describing Tinubu as “a compassionate leader who sometimes must take hard decisions.”
Earlier, Adeniyi highlighted architecture’s role in advancing the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She emphasized that “good architecture propels societal progress” by shaping infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, airports, markets, and recreational facilities.
She also raised concerns about the departure from design standards, shortage of locally manufactured building materials, and sub-standard construction practices.
The NIA President invited Shettima to the Institute’s 65th Annual General Meeting scheduled for November 26, themed “Architectural Excellence for Economic Resilience”, where he will be conferred with an Honorary Fellowship.
