Rivers Assembly resumes plenary following lift of emergency rule

The Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened for a plenary session on Thursday after the emergency rule imposed on the state was lifted.

President Bola Tinubu officially ended the emergency rule on September 17, signaling a return to normalcy for all democratic institutions in the state.

The session is being led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule at the conference hall within the legislative quarters, which has become the temporary venue for lawmakers since their official chamber at the assembly complex on Moscow Road was set ablaze and subsequently demolished by the state government.

The reconstruction of the assembly complex, overseen by former sole administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas, remains incomplete.

Emergency rule was declared on March 18 by Tinubu in response to a prolonged political crisis resulting from tensions between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). During the emergency, Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and the legislators faced an initial suspension lasting six months.
