President Bola Tinubu is holding a crucial meeting with the nation’s newly appointed service chiefs at the State House, just days after a sweeping overhaul of the military’s top command.
The high-level briefing comes on the heels of Friday’s dramatic shake-up, which saw the president replace the former service chiefs in a decisive move to reshape Nigeria’s security strategy.
A New Command Structure
The newly inaugurated leadership team includes:
· Chief of Defence Staff: Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who previously served as Chief of Army Staff, now takes the helm of the entire military apparatus, replacing General Christopher Musa.
· Chief of Army Staff: Major General Waidi Shaibu.
· Chief of Air Staff: Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.
· Chief of Naval Staff: Rear Admiral Idi Abbas.
· Chief of Defence Intelligence: Major General Emmanuel Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, who retains his position.
This marks the second major reshuffle of the military high command since President Tinubu took office in May 2023. The changes arrive amid persistent security challenges across the nation and follow recent, unverified rumors of a botched coup attempt—claims that military authorities have strongly denied.
The meeting is widely seen as a critical step for the President to set his security agenda and for the new commanders to outline their plans for addressing the country’s multifaceted security threats.
