Senate considers bill to dump petrol cars in favour of electric vehicles

A bill aimed at establishing a legal framework for Nigeria’s transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) has passed its second reading in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the proposed legislation seeks to reduce carbon emissions, boost local manufacturing, and ensure Nigeria benefits from the global shift to clean transportation. Kalu highlighted that the transport sector contributes 20-30% of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions and warned that the country risks falling behind other African nations like Kenya and South Africa in adopting EV technology.

The bill proposes the creation of a National Electric Vehicle Development and Promotion Council to coordinate the policy across all government levels.

The motion received broad support from other senators. Senator Adamu Aliero described it as “timely,” while Senators Osita Ngwu and Titus Zam emphasized the benefits for public health, job creation, and climate action.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio endorsed the bill as a “very good innovation.” It has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Industries, which is expected to report back in four weeks.
