25 schoolgirls abducted as security forces launch massive rescue operation in Kebbi

A major search-and-rescue operation is underway in Kebbi State after armed bandits abducted 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, November 17, 2025, at about 4:00 a.m., when a gang of heavily armed bandits stormed the school premises, firing sporadically. Police tactical units deployed at the school engaged the attackers in a gun battle, but the bandits had already scaled the fence and taken the students from their hostel to an unknown location.

During the assault, one man, identified as Hassan Makuku, was shot dead, while another victim, Ali Shehu, sustained a gunshot injury to his right hand.

Following the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command immediately deployed a reinforced team comprising additional police tactical units, military personnel, and vigilante groups. The combined forces are currently combing suspected bandits’ routes and nearby forests in an effort to rescue the abducted students and apprehend the perpetrators.

The Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the attack and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing security operations to enhance peace and stability.

The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar Kotarkoshi, conveyed the Commissioner’s message in a statement issued on Monday, November 17, 2025.
