Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on counts one, two and three of the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
Count 1 – Act of terrorism against FRN by making broadcast by threatening that people will die and the world will be at a standstill.
Count 2 – Threats enforcing illegal sit-at-home order.
Count 3 – Belonging to a proscribed organization
Delivering the judgment, Justice Omotosho held that Kanu’s threatening remarks during a live broadcast—where he warned that people would die and the world would “stand still”—constituted acts of terrorism against Nigeria.
According to the judge, Kanu acted intentionally and without regard for the potential harm to his own supporters.
“Mr. Kanu knew exactly what he was doing and was determined to carry out these threats,” he said. “The evidence against him is clear and unchallenged. The defendant failed to offer any explanation.”
Earlier, tension filled the courtroom as Justice Omotosho rejected Kanu’s renewed request for bail, prompting an emotional outburst from the IPOB leader. Kanu had urged the court to consider what he described as consistent rulings from higher courts in his favour, but the plea was dismissed.
The dramatic scenes marked another heated moment in the long-running case as the court proceeded with its judgment. /More to follow…
