Nigerian man in UK admits murder of 23-year-old British woman

A Nigerian man who recently relocated to the United Kingdom has admitted to the murder of a 23-year-old British woman, a former colleague with whom he had a brief relationship.

Stephanie Irons was found dead by emergency services at an address on Westdale Lane West, Mapperley, on 21 October 2025. Police were alerted after her co-workers raised concerns over a series of disturbing messages sent on the evening of the attack.

At a brief hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, January 26, Adedapo Adegbola, 40, of Woodborough Road, Mapperley, pleaded guilty to a single charge of murder. He is due to be sentenced on 5 February.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC told Adegbola that he faced a mandatory life sentence, with the court to determine the minimum term. Members of Ms Irons’ family were present, and prosecutors confirmed that victim impact statements are being prepared.

Police said Ms Irons was fatally attacked after Adegbola visited her home following the end of their relationship. Officers added that he made no attempt to seek medical help and instead fled the scene, leaving behind blood-stained clothing.

Adegbola reportedly travelled through several towns, including Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield and Hull, before returning to Nottingham the following day, where he handed himself in. He later declined to answer questions during police interviews.

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson described the case as a tragic loss, saying a “caring and compassionate young woman” had been taken from her family and friends in horrific circumstances. He praised Ms Irons’ family for their strength throughout the proceedings.
