Court fixes May 18 for trial of man accused of calling for coup on social media

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 18, 2026, for the trial of a man, Innocent Chukwuma, accused of using his social media account to call on the military to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case on Monday after the prosecution requested additional time to review the case file.

The prosecuting lawyer, David Kaswe, told the court that he had only recently been briefed on the matter after the Department of State Services (DSS) transferred the case file to his office. He asked for an adjournment to enable him properly study the file before proceeding with the trial.

Justice Abdulmalik subsequently adjourned the case until May 18 and 19 for trial.

Chukwuma was earlier arraigned before the court over a post he allegedly made on social media that authorities described as inciting.

Security operatives reportedly tracked and arrested him in Oyigbo, Rivers State.

According to the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, the defendant allegedly used his X (formerly Twitter) account, @TheAgroman, to advocate a military takeover of government.

In the post, he allegedly wrote that a coup was needed in Nigeria and called on the military to suspend the current government. The trial is expected to begin on the scheduled dates.
