The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, initially won 1–0 by Senegal, and awarded a 3–0 victory to Morocco.
In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, CAF’s Appeal Board upheld a protest filed by the Moroccan Football Federation, declaring Morocco’s Atlas Lions as the new champions of the tournament.
The decision followed allegations that Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations after their players staged a walkout during the final. The rules stipulate that any team that refuses to continue a match or leaves the pitch without the referee’s approval forfeits the game and is liable to a 3–0 loss.
According to CAF, Senegal’s actions fell within these provisions, leading to the forfeiture of the match and the reversal of the initial result.
The controversy stemmed from a late penalty awarded to Morocco after a VAR review for a foul on Brahim Diaz. In protest, Senegal’s coach, Pape Thiaw, led his players off the pitch for nearly 20 minutes before play resumed. Although Morocco missed the penalty and Senegal went on to score the only goal of the match, CAF has now ruled that the walkout constituted a violation of tournament regulations.
With this decision, Morocco has officially been crowned AFCON 2025 champions.
