Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is set to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday, according to strong indications from party insiders.
Sources within the ADC revealed that Dr Kwankwaso is expected to obtain his membership card in his hometown of Kwankwaso, located in Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State.
The former governor, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has in recent weeks hosted several key political figures at his Kano residence, fueling speculation about his planned defection.
Among notable visitors was Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Also reported to have met with Kwankwaso is Seyi Makinde, a prominent figure within a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde is aligned with a PDP bloc led by Kabiru Turaki, which remains locked in a prolonged leadership dispute with another faction associated with Nyesom Wike. Efforts to reconcile both camps have yet to produce results.
Meanwhile, the ADC has continued internal reforms, recently receiving the report of its constitution review committee. The document was presented by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, on behalf of National Chairman David Mark, who emphasised the need for stronger internal democracy, transparency, and accountability.
Kwankwaso’s expected defection is widely seen as a significant development that could reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
