Atiku: 2027 my final shot at the presidency

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, describing it as his last attempt to lead Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Atiku said the stakes are higher for him as he approaches 80, making the upcoming race his final outing in presidential politics.

A leading figure in the African Democratic Congress, Atiku emphasized the need for experienced leadership to address Nigeria’s growing challenges. He argued that his time as Vice President under Olusegun Obasanjo gave him valuable executive experience, which he believes sets him apart from newer entrants into politics.

On opposition strategy, Atiku reiterated his support for a broad coalition, warning that the Peoples Democratic Party cannot reclaim power on its own. He noted that the emerging alliance within the ADC is driven by a shared goal of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He was also critical of President Bola Tinubu, describing his administration as underperforming and expressing concern over what he sees as a weakening of democratic institutions.
Addressing the possibility of a consensus candidate, Atiku said he would support whoever emerges through an agreed process, including Peter Obi if necessary.

He further stressed the importance of security reforms, calling for improved funding, training, and welfare for security personnel, alongside stronger accountability mechanisms.

On zoning, Atiku admitted that his earlier opposition to constitutional power rotation was a mistake and pledged to support efforts to formalize it.

Dismissing corruption allegations against him as unproven and politically motivated, he urged Nigerians to vote out the APC if they desire a better future.
