Atiku will contest in 2031 — Wike Promises Abuja road projects completion by May

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a “serial contestant and loser” who may still run for office in 2031.

Wike made the remarks on Thursday while responding to Atiku’s criticism of the current administration, in which the former vice president claimed that little progress had been made for Nigerians.

Speaking during an inspection of ongoing road projects in Abuja, Wike dismissed the comments, insisting that visible infrastructural development across the FCT contradicts such claims.
He challenged Atiku to compare Abuja’s current state with the period he served as vice president, arguing that the difference is clear.

“The election will come, but governance must continue. Contractors are not part of politics,” Wike said, emphasizing that his administration remains focused on delivering results.

Amid the political exchange, the minister assured residents that major road projects would be completed on schedule. He disclosed that work on the Airport–Kuje road is nearing completion, with part of the bridge set to open soon and full delivery expected before the end of May.

Wike also confirmed that the first phase of the Kuje–Gwagwalada dual carriageway, covering about seven kilometres, will be ready within the same timeframe. He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, noting that the projects will improve connectivity and reduce congestion in the city centre.

According to him, ongoing development will transform Kuje into a major residential and investment hub, easing population pressure on central Abuja.

The minister further dismissed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that the FCT Administration attempted to disrupt its convention, describing the claims as baseless and lacking evidence.

Wike reiterated that infrastructure delivery remains the administration’s top priority, adding that over 80 percent of planned projects are expected to be completed before January.

The inspection tour, he noted, is part of efforts to ensure contractors meet deadlines and maintain high standards across the FCT.
