The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcast presenters against presenting personal opinions as facts or intimidating guests during programmes, warning that such actions will attract sanctions.
In a statement issued on Friday, the commission said it has recorded a growing number of violations of the sixth edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly across news, current affairs, and political shows.
According to the NBC, some presenters have increasingly abandoned professional standards by denying opposing views fair hearing and failing to maintain neutrality on air.
The commission stressed that such conduct breaches the broadcasting code, which requires fairness, accuracy, and balanced representation of all sides on issues of public interest.
It added that any presenter found guilty of promoting personal opinions as facts, bullying or intimidating guests, or compromising neutrality will be classified as committing a Class B offence.
The NBC also expressed concern over the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors to spread divisive, inflammatory, or unverified claims. It reiterated that broadcasters remain fully responsible for all content aired, including live programmes, regardless of guest contributions.
As Nigeria approaches a critical electoral period, the commission urged media organisations to uphold professionalism and avoid spreading misinformation, warning that violations related to hate speech, incitement, and imbalance will be met with strict penalties.
