FG files 13-count charge against alleged coup plotters

The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has filed a 13-count charge at the Federal High Court, Abuja, against six individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the government and engaging in terrorism-related activities.

The defendants—retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani—are scheduled for arraignment on April 22 before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, was also named in the charge but is currently at large.

Filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, the charges include treason, terrorism, failure to disclose security intelligence, and money laundering.

According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly conspired in 2025 to destabilise the Nigerian government and “overawe” the President—an offence under the Criminal Code. They were also said to have prior knowledge of a coup allegedly involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji but failed to report or prevent it.

Further allegations include participation in meetings aimed at undermining Nigeria’s constitutional order, as well as providing support for terrorist activities under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Financial investigations linked to the case claim that some defendants handled funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, including ₦50 million, ₦10 million, and other amounts traced to alleged terrorism financing. These charges fall under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The case is set to proceed as the government intensifies efforts to address threats to national security.
