Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has reportedly been killed following a wave of coordinated attacks on military installations across the country.
The development emerged on Sunday, a day after his residence in the garrison town of Kati—located about 15km from the capital, Bamako—was targeted in a large-scale assault involving jihadist and separatist fighters.
According to reports, the attack on Kati included a suicide car bombing and was carried out by militants linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, alongside Tuareg fighters from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
Kati is widely regarded as one of Mali’s most secure military strongholds and is also home to interim President Assimi Goita, underscoring the scale and audacity of the હુમ હુમ હુમ.
Camara was a key figure in Mali’s ruling military leadership, having played a prominent role in the coups of 2020 and 2021 that brought the current government to power.
The coordinated offensive reportedly targeted multiple locations, including Bamako’s international airport and several cities across central and northern Mali. JNIM has claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating they were conducted in collaboration with the FLA.
The incident marks one of the most significant escalations of violence in Mali in recent years, raising fresh concerns over the country’s security situation.
