Supreme Court voids PDP’s Ibadan convention

The Supreme Court has nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, dealing a major blow to the faction led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

The convention, which took place on November 15 and 16, produced a set of factional national executives under Turaki’s leadership. However, it was marred by legal controversies even before it was conducted.

A Federal High Court had earlier restrained the party from going ahead with the exercise, citing violations of the party’s constitution, unresolved disputes from state congresses, and the exclusion of some aspirants. Despite the court order, the convention proceeded, triggering further legal challenges.

The Court of Appeal later upheld the High Court’s ruling, declaring that the convention was conducted in defiance of valid court orders and that its outcomes were invalid.

Unhappy with the decisions, the Turaki-led faction approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the rulings and legitimize both the convention and the executives it produced.

In its final judgment, the apex court affirmed the earlier decisions, officially voiding the Ibadan convention and bringing an end to the prolonged legal battle over the legitimacy of the factional leadership.
