US resumes visa processing for foreign doctors, Nigerians set to benefit

Nigerian doctors are expected to benefit from a recent policy shift by the United States, which has resumed visa application processing for foreign physicians after an earlier suspension.

The suspension, introduced earlier this year, formed part of a broader visa restriction affecting several countries, including Nigeria, on national security grounds. The move had disrupted the plans of many foreign-trained doctors, as the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) paused visa renewals and processing.

However, in a quiet reversal last week, USCIS updated its guidelines to indicate that physicians are no longer subject to the processing hold. In a related statement reported by The New York Times, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that applications linked to medical doctors would continue to be processed.

Data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) shows that international medical graduates make up about 25.6 percent of active physicians in the US. A 2024 global health workforce report also ranks Nigerians as the sixth-largest group of foreign doctors in the country under the J-1 visa category.

The policy change comes amid growing concerns over a looming healthcare workforce crisis in the US. The AAMC estimates a current shortfall of about 65,000 physicians, a figure projected to rise significantly in the coming years due to an ageing population and a wave of retirements among existing doctors.

In April, several US medical associations—including groups representing family physicians, neurologists, and paediatricians—urged federal authorities to ease restrictions. In a joint letter to the secretaries of state and homeland security, they called for expedited visa processing and national-interest exemptions for qualified foreign doctors.

The resumption of visa processing is expected to ease pressure on the US healthcare system while reopening opportunities for Nigerian medical professionals seeking to practice abroad.
