President Bola Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct themselves peacefully and democratically as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a “historic moment” for the APC, noting that the party was preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.
Tinubu said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, selflessness, and sacrifice, stressing that those values had helped the party remain united through previous election cycles.
The President explained that the primaries, beginning with House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026, were more than just exercises to select candidates.
According to him, the process represents “a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party,” while also providing an opportunity for members to renew their shared ideals and commitment to the party.
Tinubu acknowledged ongoing consultations among party leaders aimed at producing consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, describing the move as commendable.
He said consensus arrangements would help reduce rancour and internal disputes, while encouraging members to take advantage of the process to strengthen party unity.
The President, however, noted that where consensus fails, party members should approach the primaries peacefully and maintain sportsmanship throughout the exercise.
He warned against bitterness, divisive conduct, and “do-or-die politics,” insisting that politics should not be treated as a zero-sum game.
“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser,” Tinubu stated, urging victorious aspirants not to gloat while encouraging unsuccessful contestants to accept outcomes in good faith and prepare for future opportunities.
He also advised winners and party leaders at all levels to reconcile with aggrieved aspirants after the primaries by extending “olive branches” to them.
The President further directed governors, party executives, and leaders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants participating in the exercise.
Tinubu emphasized that although only one candidate would emerge for each elective position, all contestants deserved the satisfaction of participating in a transparent and fair process.
The President also appealed for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s political process, urging voters and leaders to give the two groups “special consideration” during the primaries.
According to him, women and youths remain critical demographics that must not be sidelined in national politics.
Tinubu equally cautioned the Police and other security agencies against interference in the exercise, reminding them that their responsibility was strictly to ensure peaceful conduct during the primaries.
He wished all aspirants and party members success in the exercise and expressed optimism about working with eventual candidates ahead of the general elections.
