President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the killing of Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, a senior leader of the Islamic State (IS), during a joint counterterrorism operation carried out by Nigerian and United States forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement issued from the State House on Saturday, President Tinubu described the operation as a major success in the ongoing fight against terrorism and a strong example of security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
According to the President, the overnight operation was conducted by the Nigerian Armed Forces in collaboration with the United States Armed Forces and targeted the compound of the wanted terrorist leader.
“Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin,” the statement said.
Tinubu noted that the operation dealt a significant blow to the ranks of the Islamic State and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with international partners to combat terrorism and insurgency.
The President expressed appreciation to the United States government for its support, specifically thanking U.S. President Donald Trump for his leadership and cooperation in advancing shared security goals.
“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives. I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort,” Tinubu stated.
He also commended military personnel from both countries for their professionalism and bravery during the operation.
Tinubu further pledged continued action against terrorist groups operating across the country, saying he looked forward to “more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation.”
The operation marks one of the most high-profile joint military actions involving Nigerian and U.S. forces in recent years as both countries intensify efforts against ISIS-linked militants and other extremist groups in the region.
