Officer seen in viral threat video arrested, faces disciplinary panel

The Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State has arrested a police officer captured in a viral video threatening violence and engaging in conduct described as unbecoming of an officer.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the Anambra State Police Command identified the officer as ASP Newton Isokpehi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police serving in the command.

According to the statement, the command swiftly reviewed the viral footage, identified the officer involved, and immediately placed him under arrest.

The police said internal disciplinary proceedings had already been initiated against the officer in line with the ethical code and disciplinary standards of the force.

The command also disclosed that ASP Isokpehi had been subjected to a drug test as part of efforts to determine all surrounding circumstances and ensure a transparent investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the officer’s conduct, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust.

The police further assured residents that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law and police regulations.

The command also reminded officers and personnel to remain professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful while carrying out their duties, especially at a time when public conduct is constantly under scrutiny.

The statement was signed on behalf of the Commissioner of Police by DCP Ngozi Ezeabata, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration.
