Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has criticised leading opposition politicians, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, describing them as “office seekers” rather than genuine opposition leaders.
Speaking on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, Baba-Ahmed argued that effective opposition leadership goes beyond public statements and social media posts, especially in the face of worsening insecurity across the country.
Referencing recent bomb attacks in Borno State, he questioned why opposition figures had not physically visited affected communities to demonstrate solidarity with victims.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu and the late former President Muhammadu Buhari showed similar courage years ago when they visited Maiduguri at the height of the insurgency and interacted directly with residents.
“It’s not enough to tweet about insecurity,” Baba-Ahmed said, insisting that opposition leaders should take visible action rather than limit themselves to online commentary.
While expressing disappointment with much of the opposition, he singled out former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as a notable exception, describing him as a capable political figure.
Baba-Ahmed also reflected on his relationship with Peter Obi, revealing that he had disagreed with some of Obi’s political decisions and strategic moves in recent years.
